Royce Ng Ghost of Showa
AUSTRALIA / HONGKONG // Performance Hong Kong-based artist, Royce Ng presents his first full-length stage production at ‘Theater der Welt’ 2017. In this piece, which combines performance and brilliant video art, he deals with the legacy of Japanese colonial ruler Nobusuke Kishi. In the 1930s, before his tenure as Prime Minister, Kishi pushed through his economic plan in the Japanese colony of Manchukuo in North East China. Kishi’s authoritarian measures are still reflected today in the social systems of East Asia, but are still credited with securing the region’s current prosperity. Ng juxtaposes Kishi’s life with a completely different narrative: the stories of Chinese and Korean citizens, who carried the burden of Japan’s colonial economic policy. Combined, the plot strands weave together the portrait of a colonial state – from the perspective of the oppressors as well as the oppressed. But GHOST OF SHOWA is in no way just a theoretical discourse. Trendy and futuristic, exceptional artist Royce Ng works with Korean-Japanese dancer Yangjah to take the Japanese avant-garde dance style of Butoh, which emerged as a reaction to that phase of rapid modernisation, and combine it with impressive 3D video animation, created in the aesthetic of the grotesque erotic wood engravings of the 1920s and contemporary pornographic manga. A multi-layered re-telling of 20th century East Asian economic policy, presented as a modern horror story! GHOST OF SHOWA is the evolution of Ng’s first lecture performance, ‘Kishi the Vampire’, which was nominated at the Zürcher Theater Spektakel for both the Audience Prize and the Acknowledgement Prize. This piece will mark Ng’s German debut.
